How Guinness Storehouse invested in WSET beer education

The Guinness Storehouse and Open Gate Brewery in Dublin are renowned for delivering unforgettable guest experiences. To further empower their team, WSET partnered with them to deepen their team’s beer knowledge, enabling staff to confidently discuss both iconic Guinness beers and the innovative experimental brews crafted at Open Gate Brewery.

The challenge

Previous staff beer training relied on self-study, which made it difficult for team members to stay motivated and carve out time for learning. Without structure or expert guidance, engagement varied and knowledge gaps persisted, ultimately limiting the consistency and confidence of the team.

The solution

Our WSET Level 2 Award in Beer offered the structure and support the team needed. Delivered in-person over two and a half days, the course combined expert-led teaching, hands-on tastings (including Guinness beers), and the opportunity to gain a globally recognised qualification. Learning together in the classroom sparked lively discussions and a real sense of momentum - turning what could have been just another training into something genuinely fun and memorable.

The results

  • High success rate: 84% of participants passed the course, including seven with distinction and nine with merit - demonstrating a high level of engagement and capability.
  • Immediate impact: Staff gained confidence in discussing beer styles, brewing techniques and flavour profiles - enhancing their ability to influence purchasing decisions and drive sales.
  • Improved guest experience: Team members are now better equipped to engage visitors with deeper product knowledge, elevating the overall guest journey and reinforcing brand credibility.
  • Ongoing enthusiasm: Several participants have continued their development independently, reflecting long-term value and internal motivation sparked by the training.

"We've seen participants grow in confidence when speaking about all things beer and brewing – not just our own portfolio. It’s as if they’ve discovered their beer spark.
